Q&A with Stephanie Millane of Able Millane Web Services
It’s often said that people make the place, and we couldn’t agree more. Our new spotlight series introduces you to the Seward Chamber of Commerce members who make our community an incredible place to live, work and play.
Stephanie Millane started Able Millane Web Services a few years ago to meet the marketing needs of small businesses in Seward. She focuses on helping local businesses build a better web presence. Whether that means full website creation, updating search engine optimization or making websites more mobile-friendly, Able Millane Web Services can help even the smallest businesses market themselves on the internet.
We recently sat down with Stephanie to learn more about the journey she has taken as a small business owner in Seward.
How long have you lived in Seward? What first brought you here?
I moved seasonally between Skagway, Alaska, and Utah for six years. In the summer of 2006, I was hired to work for Sunny Cove Sea Kayaking and knew nothing of Seward before that. However, I fell in love with the community the first summer I was here and continued working for them seasonally until 2014 when I made the move to stay year-round. I’ve been here ever since!
What makes your business special or unique? In other words, what are you known for?
We’re known for helping local small businesses strengthen their presence online. Not only do we build websites, but we offer training on how to use your site as a part of a site build. We can also help businesses increase their presence on social media and have add on packages, like the social media bundle, which offers setting up Facebook and more, along with a bit of training on how to use social media outlets.
What would people be surprised to learn about your business or your journey as a business owner?
I recently doubled my staff to accommodate the overwhelming requests for web services. I’ve subcontracted my mother, Laurie, who is a well-established Virtual Assistant, with a lot of experience in marketing, social media, and content creation. Her creativity is really an asset to Able Millane Web Services. Now AMS has a staff of two!
Tell us about a product or service that you’re particularly proud of.
I’m proud of all of our projects, but I am particularly proud of sunnycove.com. It’s a large site with more than 60 pages, including photo libraries, video tours, a booking engine, a password-protected staff site, and an extensive staff research library. This site is constantly evolving and growing and it is a great example of what Able Millane Services can do for any business in Seward.
Describe a risk that you’ve taken in your business that paid off.
Starting a business is a risky venture in its own right. I started designing websites as a part of my regular job and built a couple of sites for local non-profits. The demand just started snowballing once the word got out in the community, and I’ve been busy ever since!
What advice would you give to a new business owner who is working to build a business like yours?
Be prepared to work your butt off to a level you probably don’t expect.
What do you like most about living and working in Seward?
First and foremost, the community of Seward is supportive and amazing. Seward is also one of the most beautiful places in the world, in my opinion.
Tell us about a community member in Seward who you admire.
There are so many small business owners, both new and established, who are visionaries and are motivated to create more for the community of Seward. They all inspire us!
How do you spend your free time?
Free time? I manage Sunny Cove, help co-manage Millane’s Serenity by the Sea Cabins, run Able Millane Web Services and also volunteer on a handful of boards. When I do have ‘free time’, I love to get outside and explore.
There are so many great wilderness areas to explore around Seward and Kenai Fjords. If you had a free weekend, where would you go?
I’d love to go out to Fox Island or into Kenai Fjords for a few nights of camping. Working at Sunny Cove Kayaking has given me opportunities to explore Fox Island and the Fjords and find a lot of hidden nooks and crannies.
Is there anything exciting on the horizon that you’d like to share?
Oh, I have a few spoons in a few pots, but you’re going to have to wait a bit to find out what I’m stewing up.
